Shark enthusiasts visiting Dubai from across the world will be delighted at the display of the region’s largest group of shark species at Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, Emaar Retail’s iconic leisure attraction in The Dubai Mall.
Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is further adding to the appeal by welcoming the smallest members in the hammerhead shark family, the ‘bonnethead or shovelhead sharks’.
The bonnetheads sharks from the Caribbean seas average 30-50 inches (70-127 cm) in length and weigh up to 24 lbs (10.8 kg). They are naturally seen at estuaries, shallow bays, sand flats and coral reef habitats.
Visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the bonnethead sharks from aquatic and marine specialists, especially about how they communicate by hunching their backs, head-shaking, jaw-snapping and circling in ‘follow the leader’ style groups and other interesting facts.
New at Underwater Zoo
In addition to viewing the Caribbean bonnethead sharks, visitors can come face-to-face with the newest addition to the ‘Small Clawed Otter’ family, the 4-month-old Ginger, who can be seen playfully interacting with her parents Pepper and Tiny in their rainforest habitat.
Also on show are some of the many ‘Zooborns’ that have arrived to Underwater Zoo throughout the spring including seven tiny additions to the Nutria family as well as the baby crocs of King and Queen Croc, now residing in their mangrove nursery habitat.
Guests can experience otter feeding and educational presentations at 2:30pm daily and take part in crocodile feeding at 4pm daily.
Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, managed by Emaar Retail LLC, features a 270-degree walkthrough tunnel. Underwater Zoo, located on Level 2 above the main aquarium tank, presents the bio-diversity in different ecological zones including Rainforest, Rocky Shore and Living Ocean. Apart from Humboldt Penguins and Caiman Crocodiles, the animals featured here include Piranhas,
Giant Spider Crabs, Small Claw Otters, Sea Jellies and Clown fish.
