Dubai, UAE; June 14, 2012: Emaar Community Management (ECM), the dedicated community management company of global property developer Emaar Properties PJSC, has won the ‘Sustainability Initiative of the Year’ honour at the ITP Middle East Facilities Management Awards 2012.

The award was in recognition of ECM’s diverse initiatives to reduce costs and enhance system efficiencies in Downtown Dubai, the 500-acre mega-development by Emaar Properties, described as ‘The Centre of Now.’

Ahmad Al Matrooshi, Managing Director, Emaar Properties, said: “The UAE has underlined its commitment to promoting sustainability and promoting energy and water use efficiency, as reflected in the ‘Green Economy for Sustainable Development’ announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President & Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

“The Award recognises the concerted programme adapted by ECM to achieve cost savings worth millions of dirhams at five residential communities in Downtown Dubai in 2011. This was despite the rise in energy bills, and was enabled through focused campaigns involving all residents to become active participants in the sustainability initiatives,” he added.

The award entries, from other developers, government entities and service providers, were evaluated by an independent panel of experts. They expressed their appreciation for the various strategies implemented across the residential communities to attain cost savings and optimise resource usage while protecting the environment. These strategies included monitoring the existing water and energy usage, and implementing simple tweaks to the system to further enhance efficiency of usage.

Among the various initiatives that ECM introduced in the residential communities included setting up special recycling bins for food, furniture, e-waste and food waste; efficiently managing the illumination in common areas resulting in impressive energy saving; and installing water saving devices on all faucets, showerheads and bidet sprays. Other measures included introducing motion sensor lights and energy-efficient halogen bulbs, and reducing the working hours of roof façade lights, where applicable. Changes were also made to the functioning of air-handling units in addition to adapting measures to optimise air-conditioning.

ECM regularly undertakes community-oriented campaigns and has been at the forefront in promoting other environment-friendly initiatives in the various Emaar communities including the recent Eco-Kids Art Contest.

Downtown Dubai is today regarded as the must-visit destination in the city, and is anchored by Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Other attractions in the community include The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination; The Dubai Fountain, the world’s tallest performing fountain; Souk Al Bahar, an Arabesque shopping mall; the vibrant Emaar Boulevard; dedicated corporate offices and several residential apartments.
