Dubai, UAE; January 1, 2012: Brilliantly draping Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, in the colours of the UAE National flag, Dubai ushered in the New Year with a breathtaking display of fireworks that captivated the world and was attended by hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Dubai’s global icon and the centerpiece of Downtown Dubai, the entire Burj Khalifa was illuminated in shimmering white, red and green hues, drawing on the colours of the UAE national flag, through the fireworks display – a first-time ever feat. The celebrations were also a fitting salute to the nation, which celebrated its 40th National Day, on December 2, 2011.

Mr. Ahmad Al Matrooshi, Managing Director, Emaar Properties, said: “The New Year’s Celebrations 2012 is our tribute to the cosmopolitan spirit of Dubai. The spectacle has reiterated this global city’s position as one of the most sought-after destinations for New Year’s celebrations. It is also another testament to Dubai’s ability to host iconic events that are truly historic and memorable.”

With the celebrations, Downtown Dubai, the 500-acre, flagship development of Emaar Properties, has once again put Dubai on the global spotlight with the much-anticipated fireworks display telecast live to an estimated 2 billion homes across the world.

Befitting the description of Downtown Dubai as ‘The Centre of Now,’ the 500-acre lifestyle destination was a sea of humanity with hundreds of thousands of visitors – both residents and tourists specially flying in for the celebrations – taking part in the region’s largest New Year’s celebrations.

With the festive lighting of Downtown Dubai serving as a perfect backdrop, celebrations began early in the evening, flagging off with the spectacular music-dance performances of The Dubai Fountain, the world’s tallest performing fountain. Several firework displays in various locations of Downtown Dubai added to the excitement.

A countdown was beamed on big-size screens located across Downtown Dubai one minute ahead of the New Year. With ten seconds to go for 2012, for every second, a firework display was made from Burj Khalifa, followed by the grand finale fireworks spectacle which began from the top of the spire of Burj Khalifa at a height of 828 metres (2,716.5 ft), progressing downward to the base, enveloping the whole tower, followed by an impressive display of colours on Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai. The display of fireworks also marked the second anniversary of the grand inauguration of Burj Khalifa.

The fireworks were choreographed to a scintillating musical composition that integrated Arabic and World Music notes to reflect the cosmopolitan outlook of Dubai. The music was composed specially for the New Year’s Celebrations 2012, Downtown Dubai.

From the towering heights – a spectacle watched by residents and visitors to Dubai from several vantage points in the city – the celebrations shifted to Burj Park, with the live performance of world music and ethnic electronica band Deep Forest, accompanied by Anglo-Japanese solo violinist Diana Yukawa.

A highlight of their eclectic, genre-cutting musical performance was the live rendition of a special track designed to mark the New Year’s Celebrations 2012 in Downtown Dubai.

The New Year’s Celebrations 2012, Downtown Dubai was organised with the support of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Police, Dubai Civil Defence, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, the Centre of Ambulance Services, Dubai Health Authority (DHA), and Dubai Media Incorporated and Dubai Events & Promotions Establishment (DEPE).

Several special viewing spots were set up for the convenience of visitors in Burj Park, an island overlooking Burj Khalifa; the Waterfront Promenade lining the adjacent Dubai Mall, Burj Plaza, the 3.5km Emaar Boulevard, The Pavilion, and other areas, in addition to a drive-in designated location in Al Meydan.

Downtown Dubai’s attractions include At the Top, Burj Khalifa, the world’s highest observation deck with an outdoor terrace; The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination; The Dubai Fountain; world-class residences; commercial offices and the Emaar Boulevard, a 3.5 km boulevard lined with retail and F&B attractions.
